CEREX™ – Redefining Biomass Conversion
Carbon Efficient Recycling with Electricity to X -BioShare’s indirect gasification and gas upgrading platform creates unmatched value from biomass
CEREX™ is BioShare’s next-generation platform for biomass valorization — an evolution beyond conventional combustion. Where traditional systems burn biomass to make heat and power, CEREX™ transforms it into renewable gases, carbon solids, and process heat through a fully integrated indirect gasification process assisted by frontier hydrogen technology.
At its core, CEREX is a dual-reactor indirect gasification system, where one chamber provides controlled heat and the other converts the remaining biomass without direct oxygen contact. This design produces a high-purity syngas that forms the basis for renewable biomethane and e-methane, while simultaneously generating biochar that can be used for permanent carbon sequestration.
Unlike conventional combined heat and power (CHP) plants, which are limited to about 4,500 hours of seasonal operation, CEREX™ operates continuously — more than 8,200+ hours per year — independent of district heating demand. The result is a system that turns biomass into a year-round source of renewable energy and negative emissions, delivering up to 10x higher annual value creation than a CHP plant*.
Why CEREX™ Matters
Modern CHP plants are, in essence, carbon oxidizers — efficient at producing CO₂, but not in a form that can be easily captured or reused, while harnessing the energy released as heat and power. This is viable only if there is a heat demand or if electricity prices are really high.
CEREX changes this dynamic. Its indirect gasification process separates clean CO₂ at source and captures stable carbon in the form of biochar. This design achieves excellent CO₂e avoided or sequestered per MWh biomass, and when downstream Scope 3 effects — such as fossil gas displacement — are included, the total climate benefit exceeds that of biogas from digestors.
